Commitment Management

Commitment Management helps you ensure performance against your action plans. As the old adage goes, what gets measured gets done and growth objectives need to take on a prominent role to make sure the organization stays focused on growth.

The benefits of putting a Commitment Management process in place are significant.

  1. Your team members know what's expected of them and each other
  2. Your team has visibility into performance
  3. Trust that what needs to get done, will get done
  4. A vastly more effective organization, all pulling in a common direction
  5. Substantial improvement in execution
  6. A way of managing that gets the best out of everyone

Coplenish uses a four part Commitment Management methodology to make sure our client's organizations stay on the path to profitable growth.

1. Define success measures based on plan objectives. Growth requires a coordinated set of activities from multiple functions. A plan is required to orchestrate the cross functional activities. Once the plan is in place, success measures based on plan objectives need to be established for each functional area.

2. Establish commitments and stretch targets. Each functional area is required to make commitments about the performance levels they will deliver. These commitments are hard and managers will be reviewed and held accountable for results based on these commitments. For each commitment management is also required to establish a stretch target. A target that the organization should strive to achieve, but it is not at this point a commitment.

3. Manage a commitment review process. Every month performance against commitments and stretch targets needs to be reviewed to evaluate progress towards the enterprise goals. Commitments that may be in jeopardy must be flagged at this point so that corrective actions can be implemented. Commitments that are not flagged are assumed to be on track, and management will be held accountable for both their commitments and for raising the flag when they need help.

4. Link performance against growth commitments to rewards. Growth needs to be an explicit ingredient in the reward system for any company. Achieving the highest levels of rewards should only occur when the organization achieves its growth and profit goals.
